Painting Your Company’s Doors to Look Flawless
When hiring a painting company to make your business attractive to your customers, you need to focus on every element of your building’s design. For example, a high-quality paint job is not finished if you don’t get the doors looking great. As a result, you need to understand how to paint doors properly to maximize the amount of coverage that you get from your door.
The following tips are designed to make your doors not only more attractive, but to improve their surface structure in subtle ways. Simply put, painting isn’t just about adding a layer of decorative material to a door. In fact, painting can also help improve the strength of the door. This process isn’t as hard as you might think, but does require taking a few necessary steps to ensure that it goes smoothly.
Remove the Door from the Hinges
Too many people make the mistake of trying to paint their doors while they’re still on the hinges. Trying to do this makes the job much more difficult. Imagine trying to crouch down to paint the edges of the door or suddenly getting smashed in the face by somebody who doesn’t realize that you’re painting that door. This issue is even more likely if you’re trying to paint during office hours.
You can avoid this issue just by removing the door entirely from the hinges during the weekend. You’ll need a few simple tools, including a hammer and a small chisel, to carefully pry the door off of the hinges. If you can’t get the hinge to move on its own, you’ll probably need to contact a professional for help to avoid damaging the door or the hinge.
If you do remove the door from the frame, place it on a pair of sawhorses to give it stability. Before you start painting, though, make sure to put up a net or some other protective barrier in the door’s frame. A failure to do so will let in a large number of pests, such as flies and mosquitoes, into your business. Once inside, they can annoy your customers or even find a place to settle and multiply.
After you have laid the door down on the sawhorses, remove the hinges, knobs and other hardware on the door. These items typically don’t get painted. Place these elements somewhere while you work, such as on a table, in a plastic container, or in a sealable plastic bag, to keep them safe from damage while you work on your door.
At this point, the door is just about ready to be painted. Make sure, though, that you’ve chosen the best color paint that you can find, one that matches the trim and frame of your business. After this step, you then need to prepare the door for the painting process. Typically, this requires a little extra work that you might not have to do with other painting jobs.
Preparing the Door
Just before you start to paint the door, make sure that you take the time to prepare it properly. Start by cleaning off all of the grime that may have built up on the door’s surface. This grime may have accumulated over a period of several years and will interfere with the painting process if you don’t remove it. Use soap and water and a sponge to break apart all stains and then hand-dry the door when you’re done.
If you haven’t already, you need to sand off any paint that may have already been on the door. Sanding the paint helps to not only remove the old paint color, but also to prepare the surface of the door for your new paint job. You don’t have to sand entirely by hand, but can also use a hand sander, which is a mechanical device that will pull away excess paint on the door, to prepare the surface.
At this point, you can add a little primer to the surface of the door to make the paint stick to it even better. You’ll need at least two coats of primer for your paint. Between each layer, you need to wait a few hours for the paint to dry. This process can end up taking all day if you aren’t careful, so make sure to paint when you don’t have any important business to do in your facility.
Painting the Door
Now that you’ve prepared the door for the painting process, you can mix up your paint and start applying it. You can apply the first coat using a roller simply to get it on as quickly as possible. That said, don’t rush through the process. Thoroughly coat the top of the door with the paint and let it sit for a few hours to dry. You can then add a second coat using a brush or the roller.
Add as many coats as you like on the door, always waiting a few hours for the paint to dry between applications. If you want to hurry up the drying process, a fan set to a “low” setting can help it dry. Make sure, though, to avoid pointing the fan too close to the paint. The wind it creates could push the paint across the surface of the door and cause streaks or drips that will make the door very unappealing.
After you finish with the top side of the door and the paint is thoroughly dried, turn the door over to the other side and perform the same process. Make sure that you give yourself enough time in the day to complete this activity, or else you may end up having to hang an unpainted door, which will look very unattractive to your customers. Pro tip: Start with your interior doors first to avoid this problem.
Don’t neglect to add a finisher to the door to make sure the paint is as durable as possible. The finishing agent will go on over the paint once it is dry and should utilize at least two coats. Like with the primer, you need to wait a few hours for the finisher to dry before the job is done. Though this process is time-consuming, doing it adequately ensures that your doors look perfect.
