Having a pool in your own backyard can turn it into your personal private oasis. There are a ton of different sizes and styles backyard pools can be, so you can make it yours. Pools provide a place to both exercise and relax. Of course, that’s all contingent upon your ability to keep it in good condition.
Pools require regular general maintenance to be safe to use. Regular cleaning and sanitizing are critical, as is making sure that the chemicals and pH of the pool are balanced. There are some pool maintenance tasks you can probably handle yourself, or you can hire pool professionals to handle general pool maintenance tasks. If it seems that parts of your pool pump system or other pool hardware needs to be serviced, repaired, or replaced, it may be better to call for professional help.
Pool surfaces are often made from concrete, fiberglass, or vinyl. Depending on what the surface of your pool is made from, you may need to take special care to keep your pool in good condition. Concrete is a porous surface and therefore will require regular cleaning to prevent bacteria growth. The surfaces will need to be brushed regularly, and the resulting debris vacuumed and removed. It’s also important to watch out for cracks. If you see any, your pool may need resurfacing. A concrete pool that gets too dirty will need to be professionally acid washed to make it safe to use again.
If your pool is to stay in good condition, you’ll need to take special care of it before and after winter arrives. The freezing weather conditions that are common for Iowa’s winters aren’t good for your pool, since frozen water in pool equipment can cause serious damage. You’ll need to winterize your pool to prevent that damage. After winter is over and before you start using your pool again, you’ll essentially need to reverse the process, making sure your pool is clean, balanced, and prepared for use.
Keeping a pool in good condition takes a decent amount of time and care. There’s general maintenance to do, occasional surface care to have done, and tasks that need to be done before and after winter. That said, as long as you take care of your pool, you should be able to enjoy it for years to come.
